ARITHMETRICK #10 UP, UP, AND AWAY!!

In class we learned a "trick" when multiplying by 11.  Try some more numbers to see if it always works.  Share with your parents.  Here is how we did it.

To multiply a two-digit number by 11, first write the two digits of the number in the answer space, but leave a space in the middle of the two digits.  Then add the two digits together.  Write that sum in the space you left between the original two digits.
PROBLEM:   63 x 11
Step 1:  Write the number 63 in the answer space, leaving
a space in the middle.                                                         6_3
Step 2: Add the 6 and the 3                                             6 + 3 = 9
Step 3: Place the sum (9) between the 6 and the 3.             693

If you have to "carry", this is what you do...
PROBLEM: 76 x 11
Step 1:  Write the number 76 inthe answer space,
leaving a space in the middle                                               7_6
Step 2: Add the 7 and the 6                                             7 + 6 = 13
Step 3: Place the ones digit of the sum (3) between
the 7 and the 6                                                                    736
Step 4: Add 1 to the hundreds digit (the 7)                           836
